Call for Research Papers

For more than four decades, the BTW conference has served as the main network event for researchers and practitioners from the data management community in Germany and its neighboring countries. It helps advancing research through the exchange on classic core topics of database and information systems technology, but also on topics such as data science, data engineering, and database theory.

Tracks and Topics

At the BTW conference, both classic and emerging problems from the database and information systems area and their possible solutions will be discussed. Two categories of papers are welcome at BTW 2027, regular research papers and experiment, analysis, and benchmarking (EAB) papers, across all topics relevant to the conference. Contributions will be organized in four tracks. Since many papers will address aspects from more than a single track, authors will be able to assign their paper to multiple tracks. Papers covering basic research, applied research, or applications are equally welcome in all tracks

(1) Database Technologies and Systems.

  • Query processing and optimization
  • Storage and physical database design
  • Indexing, access methods
  • Data management on modern hardware
  • Transaction processing and concurrency control
  • Data warehousing and analytics
  • Implementation and architecture of database systems
  • Parallel, distributed, and cloud-based data processing
  • NoSQL systems (e.g., systems for data streams and multi-modal data)
  • Performance analysis and benchmarking

(2) Data Engineering & Data Science.

  • Green-IT, sustainability, data ethics, and FAIR data management
  • Data analytics, mining, intelligent systems
  • Machine learning for DB and DB for machine learning
  • Data transformation, integration, linkage, and interoperability
  • Data preparation, cleaning, profiling, and visualization
  • Data provenance, versioning, and reasoning
  • Data streaming and dataflow engines
  • Batch- and ETL-processing systems
  • Schema engineering, evolution, and optimization
  • Metadata management and recording
  • Semantic data and knowledge bases

(3) Text, Semi-structured Data, and IR.

  • User aspects of retrieval applications
  • System and foundational aspects
  • Retrieval models, query processing and ranking, efficiency, and scalability
  • Machine learning, deep learning, and neural models
  • Text mining and text analysis
  • Natural language processing
  • Applications such as web and social media search, professional and domain-specific search
  • Evaluation research of retrieval systems, users, and/or applications

(4) Database Languages & Theory.

  • All topics of the other tracks are in principle suitable for Databases Languages and Theory, but this track is primarily interested in work focusing  on foundational aspects concerning the principles and theory of data management

Procedures

BTW 2027 aims to be attractive for authors and conference participants. For this purpose, we will continue or extend the new measures introduced with previous instances of BTW:

During submission, the authors will be asked to choose the flavour of their paper (research or EAB) and one or more tracks that best fit. The organization team encourages repeatability and reproducibility of the experiments and analyses of all papers.

Submissions can be in the form of long papers (original papers or review papers) and short papers (on current projects and ongoing research). Papers should be written in English. English is also recommended for presentations at the conference.

The contributions must follow the specifications of the conference proceedings (LNI style, see https://gi.de/service/publikationen/lni). The page limit (not including references) is 20 pages for long papers and 10 pages for short papers. Submissions exceeding the page limit will be desk rejected. The accepted papers will be published in the Lecture Notes in Informatics (LNI) of the GI.

Submissions via https://www.conftool.com/btw2027/ from July 2026 onwards.

Deadlines

  • Submission deadline for abstracts is September 11, 2026  September 24, 2026.
  • Papers are due September 18, 2026  October 01, 2026.

Guidelines for Artificial Intelligence-generated Content

Generative AI tools and technologies, such as ChatGPT, may not be listed as authors of a submission to BTW 2027.
The use of content generated by artificial intelligence (AI) in an article (including but not limited to text, figures, images, and code) must be disclosed in an “AI-Generated Content Acknowledgment” section placed just before the references.
This section does not count toward the page limit. The AI system used shall be identified, and specific sections of the article that use AI-generated content shall be identified and accompanied by a brief explanation regarding the level at which the AI system was used to generate the content.
If the authors are uncertain about the need to disclose the use of a particular tool, they should err on the side of caution and include a disclosure in the “AI-Generated Content Acknowledgment” section.
